teenage sitting

Friday, September 14th, 2007

funtobe was given the task to babysit for a week a 13 years old girl. actually one should call it pre-teenage-sit.  a little taste of domestic household life has done no one any harm, and for your humble funtobe it is kind of like- “welcome to the real world” prolog. you know, the world where people get every morning up at 7:00 AM and where lunch is served at 1:30, and lights-out is around 10:00.  i think one of the main reasons funtobe have chosen such a silly profession such as  a musician is that one doesn’t have to wake up so early. i really don’t get how i did it during the long years of high-school\army.  i also understand better now all the housewives and mothers of this world. it is not an easy task to come up every day with new ideas of what to cook. and i just have one teenager under my supervision, i don’t want to think what is it like with more than one kid on different ages. also exercising authority with kids who are not yours and that you are found of is not so easy. the worse thing that it makes one feel so old. already after 2 days i found my self quoting some adult sentences that my mom used to say. it is like a dark magic where you turn over night from a boy to a man. how weird… ( dedicated to all the mothers that are out there struggling )

amsterdam

funtobe was spending a lovely day in amsterdam on the week end. what a true funtocity. this thing about europe that you can just take the car and get everywhere in a few hours drive is a notion that even after 7 years in the continent is still exciting. i guess it has to do with one growing up on an island that the only way getting out of is taking a plane. the only problem with amsterdam except  the usually miserable weather  that surprisingly enough was almost perfect this weekend, is using in it a mean of transportation that is not a bike.  driving with a car there is a not such a pleasant adventure.  one needs to navigate between this crazy urban mass consists of an endless number of suicide bikers a few trams and buaffeled tourist pedestrians. but what killed me the most was the parking situation. finding a parking was not that difficult, maybe because it was sunday, or because nobody is stupid enough to enter the city with a car, but i actually think it is because of the unbelievable price of parking on the street- 4,6 euros for an hour! on European standards it is perverse. however the real shocking part was that when we got back to the car. we walked the street approaching the parking spot and many cars had bright yellow wheel locks.  they were parking on a legal spot just without a valid parking ticket. of course all the wheel locked cars where foreign.  this is probably the known dutch hospitality for strangers. i don’t want to know how much it cost to release one of these things.
since our parking ticket expired a couple of hours before we really started to feel anxious. especially that my companion has a very interesting habit of getting a ticket every time she visits the netherlands.  but the merciful parking gods spread our souls and pockets.  i thin it is my first blog entry with a happy ending. am i sick?
